How gifting works

Choose a pass

Add it to your cart, then enter their name and mailing address. That's where every issue goes - theirs, not yours.

We'll mail the Season Opener

The boxed first delivery goes out tracked, and you'll get an email the moment it ships, so you know when it lands.

The rest follows

Any issues still to come are mailed as they're released, until the pass is complete. Then it ends on its own - nothing to cancel.

About Gift Passes

What is a Gift Pass?

A Gift Pass is Sunday Club bought for someone else. You pay once, we mail the issues to them, and that is the whole arrangement.

It is not a subscription in your name. Nothing renews, nothing bills again, and there is nothing for you to remember to cancel later.

There are two:

  • The Season Gift Pass covers one season - three issues
  • The Annual Gift Pass covers a full calendar year - twelve issues

Either way it opens with a Season Opener, the boxed delivery that starts a season. Sunday Club publishes one new issue a month, and a pass always covers its full count of issues however they happen to arrive.

You can buy one for yourself if you would like. Plenty of people do.

What is a Season Opener?

It is the boxed delivery that opens a season, and it is how every Gift Pass begins.

Inside:

  • Every issue published so far - the current one, plus any catch-up issues
  • A Sunday Club pencil and a postcard
  • A sticker set
  • The All Games No News(Letter) - notes from the editor's desk and a few solving tips
  • A special extra chosen for that season, different every time

It is sent tracked, so you will know when it lands. Issues published after it are mailed on their own as each one comes out.

When does each season start and end?

Sunday Club comes out in four seasons a year, and each season is three monthly issues.

  • Season 1: January, February, March
  • Season 2: April, May, June
  • Season 3: July, August, September
  • Season 4: October, November, December

A Season Gift Pass covers whichever season is running when you buy it, start to finish. If some of those issues have already gone out, they arrive together in the Season Opener.

If you are not sure which season you are buying into, write to us and we will tell you.

What's the difference between the Season and Annual Gift Pass?

Length, and one thing in the box.

Both open with a Season Opener - the boxed delivery holding the issues published so far along with a pencil, a postcard, stickers, the All Games No News(Letter), and that season's special extra. From there they differ:

  • The Season Gift Pass is three issues across a single season. A good fit for a teacher, a coworker, or anyone you are giving something small and specific.
  • The Annual Gift Pass is all twelve issues of the calendar year. It works out cheaper per issue, it keeps arriving all year, and the Sunday Club Signature Tote travels in its box, which no other pass includes.

Neither one renews.

Do Gift Passes renew?

No. This is the main thing that separates a Gift Pass from a regular subscription.

When you buy a Gift Pass you pay once, for a set number of issues. When those issues have all been delivered, it ends on its own. No card is charged again, no renewal notice arrives, and there is nothing to cancel.

If you would rather set up something that keeps going, a regular Season or Annual Pass does that instead, and you can have it mailed to any address you like.

What if I give it partway through a season or year?

They still get everything. Nothing is missed and nothing is prorated.

If issues have already been published when you buy, those arrive together in the Season Opener - we call them catch-up issues - and the rest follow as they come out.

  • A Season Gift Pass bought mid-season delivers the issues already out, then the remainder of that season
  • An Annual Gift Pass bought mid-year delivers everything published so far that year, then the rest through December

This does mean the number of deliveries varies. Buy early in a season and there are three. Buy near the end and all three issues can turn up together in one. Either way the pass covers every issue of its season.

A fuller first delivery is a nice thing to receive, so giving one late in a season is no disadvantage.

When will the first issue arrive, and is shipping included?

Shipping is included on every Gift Pass, and the Season Opener is sent tracked.

Most Season Openers go out within a few business days of your order and reach US addresses the week after. The issues that follow travel as letter mail, so we do not put a firm date on those.

We are a small team printing and mailing these ourselves, so if something is running behind we would rather tell you than guess. Write to us any time and we will check where yours is.

Can I include a handwritten note?

Yes, on either pass.

Write your message in the cart and we will copy it out by hand onto a card that travels in the Season Opener box, so they know who it is from before they open anything.

Keep it to a couple of sentences. These are written by actual people at our studio in Brooklyn, which is the point, but it does mean there is only so much room on the card.

What address do I use, and what if I get it wrong?

Enter their mailing address as the shipping address at checkout. That is where every issue goes. Your own address only needs to appear as the billing address.

If you realize afterward that something is off, write to us before the Season Opener ships and we will fix it. After that we can still correct it, and we will resend anything that went astray.

Addresses typed from memory go wrong more often than you would think, so it is worth a second look at the apartment number before you order.
